Providence, Rhode Island — Americans for Prosperity (AFP) responded to the passage of the state budget by the Rhode Island General Assembly.

AFP Northeast Region Director Ross Connolly said: 

“Rhode Island families are tired of limited health care options, long wait times to see a doctor, and costly care. The FY27 budget removes regulations that limit access to affordable care. While this was a great step in the right direction, the inclusion of a wealth tax and irresponsible spending will have serious consequences for Rhode Island’s economy. 

“We have seen this play out in Massachusetts, which enacted a similar tax and promptly saw high earners and businesses relocate to more competitive states. Rhode Islanders work hard for what they earn, and they deserve a government that lets them keep more of it, not one that drives them to pack up and leave. Proposals like Senate Minority Leader de la Cruz’s S-2672, which would have phased in meaningful income tax reductions over five years, offered a well-balanced, pro-growth alternative that rewards work and keeps Rhode Islanders invested in their state’s future. That is the direction this budget should have taken.”
